P.S. 152, The School of Science and Technology, is located in the historic residential neighborhood of Midwood, Brooklyn. Originally constructed in 1907, the building underwent a major renovation and expansion in 1998. Despite the updates, the library retains its original glass block windows, providing structural integrity and abundant natural light.

 

Our recent redesign of the library at P.S.152 reimagines the space as a flexible, welcoming library for its 500 elementary students that supports a wide range of activities including independent study, collaborative learning, multimedia projects, performances and presentations.

 

We also chose to preserve the original glass block windows for their beauty and history, keeping the surrounding area visually uncluttered to let them stand out. At the entrance, a sensory wall encourages tactile exploration and interactive play while creating a vibrant and welcoming first impression.

A defining feature of the redesign is the zig-zagging soffit crossing the ceiling. By highlighting the soffit with the column below in green, it’s transformed into a focal point that anchors the room, visually connecting the different activity zones and bringing the room together as a whole

.

Throughout the space, a palette of blues and greens, the school's official colors, are seen in the lounge areas, custom millwork and structural elements. Special lighting was chosen for each area to give a playful effect to the whole.

 

The result is a vibrant, multifunctional library that supports learning, creativity, and community while providing students with an inspiring place to read, explore, and collaborate.
