Walt Whitman Junior High School, I.S.246, was built in 1950 and named after American writer and Brooklyn resident, Walt Whitman.  Located in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, the school serves around 350 middle school students. 

 

Our goal for this library was to create a dynamic hub for learning, creativity, and community engagement.​ Previously, the space consisted of one underutilized storage room and one existing library with limited shelving and flexibility for supporting varied learning activities and collaborative needs.  

 

We combined the two to create an open plan library organized into three distinct yet connected zones: a classroom for instruction, a flexible reading lounge and a computer area. Each space is defined through color, lighting, and furniture, creating a clear sense of identity while maintaining visual continuity throughout the library.

The entrance with a dark blue soffit and integrated lighting, establishes a welcoming threshold that transitions into a flexible lounge furnished with comfortable, movable seating to support both individual reading and collaborative learning.

The classroom is designed as a warm and inviting learning environment, featuring high-quality, ergonomic furnishings that promote comfort and focus. In contrast, the computer area is defined by red acoustic wall tiles and tables, reinforcing the distinct character of each zone while contributing to the overall vibrancy of the space.

This project is part of Atelier Pagnamenta Torriani’s architectural acupuncture interventions: a transformative series of libraries in New York City public schools that are expanding their educational purpose by rebuilding communities through culture.
