HERBERT LEHMAN LIBRARY

Photographs by APT

The Lehman Educational Campus library is located in a 1971 school building in the Bronx, NY, that bridges the Hutchinson River Parkway below.

The space was transformed to create a hospitable teens’ Campus library. We manipulated the ceilings heights, the lighting patterns and the perimeter walls definition. We added colors in the ceiling vaults and the corresponding flooring below to define intimate areas within the main space. A fun graphic spells out “Library” on the wood paneling at the main entrance.

Local craftsmen built the custom ceiling, the custom furniture and the paneling with the graphics.

The library’s materials and technologies, the ergonomic furniture, and the ceiling with LED lighting respond to the latest environmental and health requirements developed with the client.

This project is part of Atelier Pagnamenta Torriani’s architectural acupuncture interventions in NYC: a transformative series of public school libraries that are expanding their educational purpose by rebuilding communities through culture.
