ALEJANDRINA B DE GAUTIER LIBRARY
Brooklyn, NY
1,000 SF
Completed 2018

The De Gautier primary school library is located in a 1970 school building in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, NY.
The client is seeking a vibrant space for the young students, yet the room has no natural light.
After ascertaining that the library couldn’t be relocated, the studio’s solution was to insert a sculptural ceiling to create a luminous sky.
The custom designed shelving with the story telling area, the flexible classroom and the computer area provide different activity zones.
Local craftsmen built the sculptural ceiling and the custom wood shelving along the perimeter.
The library’s materials and technologies, the ergonomic furniture, and the ceiling with LED lighting respond to the latest environmental and health requirements developed with the client.
This project is part of a transformative series of APT school libraries that are expanding their educational purposes by rebuilding communities through culture.
